James sets Casa Serena course record
17.09.2011: Mark James ripped up the history books as he shot a spectacular eight under par 63 in the second round of the Casa Serena Open, setting a new course record.
The former Ryder Cup Captain hit nine birdies in a round that he described as the best chance he’s ever had in his long and successful career to break 60, having even had the luxury of missing some small putts for further birdies.
The Englishman fired six birdies on the front nine without dropping a single shot at Casa Serena Golf before three birdies and one bogey on the way to his lowest European Senior Tour round, which left him two under for the tournament.
It was a case of ‘what a difference a day makes’ for James after an opening round of 77 left him tied for 69th and 13 shots off the lead.
“I just putted better, that was the only difference,” said an elated James. “It was little bit to do with getting used to the course too, I made a couple of mistakes in the first round that I shouldn’t have done but it certainly helps to know the course now.
“I hit every fairway and every green and it just seemed easier, my swing wasn’t vastly different, I just played well.
“I doubt if I’ll ever have a better chance to 60 but I was actually putting badly on the back nine, I missed three putts within five feet but the greens were difficult but I’ll take a 63!”
Eamonn Darcy made an early push up the leaderboard in the second round as birdies on the first, fifth and sixth holes left him three under through six holes and four under for the tournament after an opening round of 70.
English pair Peter Mitchell and Gary Wolstenholme, the defending champion, also got off to good starts as they opened their second rounds with birdies on the first followed by two pars, leaving them three shots off the lead set by Roger Chapman through three holes.
